Molding Planes

Before the days of store bought moldings and Stanley combination planes, every cabinetmaker and joiner had a chest full of molding planes. For the most part these planes are almost identical, however, there are subtle but important differences. More on the differences between cabinetmaker's and joiner's molding planes. Joiner's planes are much more common to find, because far more people were employed building houses than were employed building furniture by hand. Both types of planes can still be used on today's projects. By our estimation, you haven't lived, until you have struck a molding with an original molding plane that once sung in the shop of a 19th Century master. 18th Century molding planes are quite scarce and should be left to collectors. We hope that the collection presented here will offer something for everyone.

A word on sharpening and using molding planes.

American Molding Planes

Sandusky Tool Co

MP120159 Sandusky Tool Co This plane cuts an unusual complex profile that is unique in my experience. It has a small cove, then a large square ovolo, and then what would be the final fillet is radiused and flows into the depth top. I have never seen that treatment before. The profile is 1 3/8" wide and 1" deep. The plane is in nice as found condition. The profile would make a good bottom half of a cornice molding, to be capped off with a small ogee on the edge of a separate piece. G+ Sold

W. Vance

MP120161 W. Vance A very rare American side round plane. Marked 5 for 5/8", this is the left side plane. I have never seen a matched pair of American side round planes. This is the third example that I have seen in 25 years. It is in a very useful size and is in marvelous untouched condtion. G++ Sold

N. Spaulding, McLean

MP120172 N. Spaulding, McLean A very unusual 1 1/2" molding that is a fillet, a quarter round, and a quite pronounced ogee. Not a standard profile. The plane is crisp and superb. The patina is damaged on the front of the plane, not the toe, but the sides near the front. It looks like somebody started to clean it and then stopped. The surface feels fine and with a bit of linseed oil this could be blended back in. It probably had something spilled on it that was cleaned off with a solvent. The plane would otherwise rate Fine G++ $169

J.F.

MP120131 J.F. A group of 5 craftsman made planes, all from South Eastern PA. These planes are early 19th Century and would likely have been used for furniture. All of them are in untouched condition with nice patina. The prize is a thumbnail plane for doing drawer edges. It is the perfect size for furniture. Sadly, the wedge finial is sheared off, but this is an easy fix. Next there is a 1/8" bead. The type that has no flat at the bottom of the quirk, i.e. the type that you can't paint, a true cabinetmaker's bead. Next is a 1/2" bead, the most worn plane of the group. Fourth is a grooving plane that may have been for drawer bottoms, or it may be half of a T&G pair. Finally, there is a modified plane that is now a fixed fillester, or halving plane, probably to do the rabbet on the edge of a cabinet door. I have a Dutch Cupboard in my living room that this plane fits the door nicely. The value here is 85% in the thumbnail, 15% in the 1/8" bead, and the rest are just along for the ride. A rare find of original American cabinetmaker's tools. From an important PA collection. G+ $195

L. Kennedy, Harfford

12018 L. Kennedy, Harfford A lovely untouched 3/4" bolection. There is some light shrinkage checking on the toe but this plane is otherwise superb. Great untouched surface. The blade is still sharp enough to use, but I would give it a light honing. Very nice. G+ $129

Unmarked

12016 Unmarked A super-complex bolection with larger bolection, one of my very favorite moldings. This is a rare profile. It measures about 2 inches wide. I am not sure about what it was used for, but my guess is a chair rail molding. Sadly, when I bought this plane it was just a body. I had Larry Williams, of Clark and Williams fame, make me a blade for it some years ago when he was convalescing from an arm injury. It is still missing the wedge, but that is a pretty easy thing to make. If you want to use it, the blade will need some more work to match it more carefully to the profile. The plane is marked on the back with a manufacturer's model number, "No. 104". I have never bothered to look it up, but is clearly the work of one of the big American factory makers. Untouched condition. This would be a $500 plane if it had the original wedge and iron. G+ $199

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP111210 A Cummings, Boston A rare curved hand rail molding plane. This plane is as rare as hen's teeth. The blade is by Ash, with a matching profiled cap iron by Ash. That is also a rare feature. Wonderful condition. One of 3 curved American molding planes that I bought with a collection. I have seen fewer than 8 of these in 25 years. The blade is 1 1/2" wide. The fence is plated, which may or may not be original. There is a small check on the right side at the wedge cheek, as noted in the photo. A magnificent piece. G++ $469

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP111128 S. M. A cabinetmaker's cornice plane cuttting a 3 1/8" wide ogee with fllet and reverse ogee, the quintessential American cornice molding profile. If you only own one cornice plane for all of the period furniture that you make, this is the profile that you want. This plane is probably cabinetmaker made. It is applewood with a round topped iron and clearly 18th Century features. The tote has a very distinctive look that I have seen on other 18th Century New England planes. I think that the tote is replaced, its surface is just a little too smooth and nobody would overclean just the tote, but it is very well done and I would assume follows the original. Otherwise it is doubtful that it would have been made in this style. A superb early plane for the user or collector. G+ $695

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP1110103 J. Bradford, Portland A very rare curved stair rail molding plane by a scare Maine maker. One of three rare curved complex molding planes that we recently acquired from a good collection. In 25 years the number of American curved molders that I have seen is less than 10. Compassed examples are also rare, but much more common than curved examples like this, where the entire body of the plane is cut on a curve. G+ $365

Antique Molding Plane

MP111088 I. Sleeper A nice as found, and quite scarce, 3/8" astragal plane by John Sleeper, a veteran of the American Revolution and 18th Century New Hampshire planemaker. 9 3/4" long. The surface is a bit dry and I would be tempted to use a very light coat of linseed oil, and then wax it much later when the oil is good and dry. A true piece of American history for no money really. G+ $159

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP111051 Tho Napier Thomas Napier is the only planemaker know to have signed planes on both sides of the Atlantic, having learned his trade in Scotland and then moved to Philadelphia. I don't know where this plane was made, but it was found in Britain by the famous retired Jim Wareham many years ago. It was in Jim's collection for years and has subsequently been in my collection for about 15 years. The profile is one that I associate as being more of an American profile. It is my very favorite profile, a double bolection, 1 5/8" wide. I don't recall seeing a British plane with this profile and I wonder if Napier introduced it into the colonies, or if this plane was made in Philadelphia and then made its way back over to Britain. When I bought it from Jim, it was untouched, and had a strip of copper screwed on to the depth stop, which had been slightly reduced. I had Bob Baker remove the copper strip and put a piece of wood over the holes that also built the depth stop back to the original position. Believe me, if I didn't mention it, you wouldn't notice it. Bob was that good. This is one of the best 18th Century molding planes that I have seen and an historically important plane on several levels. G+ $1465

Antique Molding Plane

MP111015 W. Pawlett & Co. Cleveland, Ohio A big 1 1/4" wide side bead with boxing on the fence and the quirk. A rare Ohio maker. As found with a nice patina. The wedge has some roughness. G+ $55
See Picture

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP11094 Unmarked This plane is identical to the shipwrights compassed hollows made by Tolman, and I would say that it is a Tolman made plane. It has the distinctive Tolman double iron, marked Buck Brothers, which is a feature not normally found on molding planes. It is 1" wide. As found, very clean, and superb. It would be worth nearly double if it was marked. Fine $78

Antique Molding Plane

MP11097 J & L. Dennison A pair of 5/8" table planes (rule joint). These planes were found together, and I believe that they are an original pair, but the round does not have a York pitch iron and only one of them has an owner's mark. They are fresh to market and I can't believe that anyone put them together. The chances of finding two by the same maker would be like winning the lottery. Either way, they will make great users. Theyare dirty but will clean to at least G+ $139

Antique Molding Plane

MP11086 W. Vance A superb custom profile molding plane, cutting a thumbnail with ogee. Probably a cabinetmaker's plane. This delicate molding would be very difficult to work and would be used for a furniture molding. Marked 5/8" this is really the depth of the molding, the width is 1/2". Like many Baltimore planes, the wood has a defect in the rear. Baltimore makers were often using scruffy wood, a reflection of how competitive their business was. The wedge on this plane is not the right wedge. Hence the low price for such a magnificent plane. G+ $85

Antique Molding Plane

MP110747 Butler, Phila A 5/16" fully boxed center bead. 2 old fence holes in each side and some rat chew on the rear edge. Rats will chew where there is salt from old persperation. It is more common than you think. It it looks like a rasp was being used on a plane, look again more closely and you might realize that it was a rat. Gently cleaned by a collector, this is still a nice early Philadelphia molding plane. G- $45

Antique Molding Plane

MP110624 Illegible A classic Philadelphia,/Eastern PA interupted lignum boxing molder. This feature most have been very tricky to execute, and is only found on early 19th Century planes from this area. This plane is a read with follow plane, cutting 1/4" beads. The plane looks to be very usable. Sadly, it has been shortened to 9 1/2" so the rear has been removed. This was done a long time ago, not recently. In modern times, a thoughtless collector has banged his name and inventory number on the rear. For these two reasons, it is very cheap, but it is still a great plane and a scarce form. G+ $55

Antique Molding Plane

MP110653 E.L Mathews/P. Chapin, Maker, Balto A rare American wash board plane by a rare American planemaking partnership. This is the only plane with this mark that I have ever seen. The plane looks like it was just lifted out of a tool chest that had been sealed for 150 years. The beech also has very lovely grain. Signed wash board planes by any maker are very scarce. This is an important find for an American wooden plane collector. Fine- $165

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP11069 Butler, Philada A 3/4" astragal. Let me begin by saying that this is not a TBT quality molding plane, it is one that I got in a group. However, it is still a decent plane so I am offering it with the caveat that this is more of an auction grade plane. It has two small holes in the left side running up through the top, where it was probably attached to a display board. It has also been varnished. The top of the blade tang is broken off. Still, it is a usable 3/4" astragal by a good Philadelphia maker. Priced to go away. Good $38

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP110616 Wm Woodward, Taunton A 1/2" bead with a compass pinwheel decoration on the side. I've not seen that on a plane before. Nice untouched condition. G++ $65

Antique Molding Plane

MP110439 Unmarked A totally as found 7/8" wide astragal with Grecian. This profile has very sharp quirks, showing that it was not intended to be painted. It was more likely a cabinetmaker's plane. It looks to be American and is late 18th Century. Great untouched surface. Very nice. G+ $89

Antique Molding Plane

MP110376 L Gardner, Green St. Boston This plane is as close to mint as is possible for an antique wooden plane to come. The cut is a 1 1/2" gentle ogee that I believe was intended for hand rail work. Absolutely superb. Fine $139

Antique Molding Plane

MP110382 D. Colton and B. Shenneman, No 291 Market St. PHILa A 1 inch side Grecian ogee with bevel. This plane is not up to the usual TBT standards, it came in a lot of tools, but it is a perfectly good user plane. The wedge has the common lengthwise split that needs to be glued up, but otherwise there are no defects that will impede using it. It just is not as pristine as the tools that we usually sell. It is priced to go. Good $48

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP110368 B. Sheneman, 297 Market St. Phila. A rare handled American wash board plane. Wash board planes are rare, but a handled example is unique in my experience. This plane has nice patina and is as found. It cuts two valleys at once while a third projection acts as a fence riding in a previously cut valley. 14" long. You won't see another one. A rare survivor from an earlier time when washboards were part of daily life. G++ $285

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP110265 S. V. Pierce A graduated set of handled reverse ogee with bevel. These planes are superbly well made, with the form of the integral handles being as good as any that I have seen, but I am not sure if they were made by the craftsman, S. V. Pierce, or are unmarked planes that he marked as an owner. If he was an owner/maker, then they are the best made craftman made wooden planes that I have ever seen. I can't express enough how impresed with these planes I am. The are in wonderful as found condtion.. The front were sticking to some deteriorated cardboard and that needs to be cleane off. Otherwise they look as good as when they were in a 19th Century tool chest. There are 4 plans, but one is missing its wedge and iron, so I have priced them as if there were three. The sizes are 1", 1 1/2", 1 5/8", & 2" missing the iron. By a better know maker, one of these planes would be worth this amount. Handled molding planes made from a single piece of wood are rare. Fine $385

Antique Molding Plane

MP110241 W. Raymond A unique set of 4 molding planes, that I can only speculate on the function of. There are two curved and one straight plane, that all cut the same profile, which I think is a form of a fenced cock bead. The curved planes are fenced left and fence right, so that you could work in either direction on a curved piece. These three planes were clearly intended as a set. The fourth plane cuts a 1/2" astragal. This one has some chips from the rear where it was struck to set it. These planes have great as found patina. Here is the kicker, all four have replaced wedges, and one plane has a replaced blade. I have owned these about 20 years and I made the wedges back then. They are accurately made and colored, but no effort was made to age the wedges to they won't fool anyone. Bob Baker would have made these wedges look original, but I am no Bob Baker so I just try to make things look correct in form. The replaced blade fits properly and has been ground to profile, but you can see that it is freshly ground compared to the other 3. These planes are so rare that I can overlook there shortcomings. They are true 18th Century American planes, and probably cabinetmaker's planes at that. G+ $295

Antique Molding Plane

MP110230 S. S. Barry, N. York A rare unsprung molding plane with a very steep iron. The profile is hard to describe. It has no fence, but there are three holes on the bottom where a fence had been screwed on. The profile is 1 3/8" wide. There are some chips in the other boxing, but nothing too bad. Otherwise no issues and a plane that is unique in my experience. Possibly for decorating the legs of tables. G++ $179

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP110128 Unmarked A group of 5 18th Century molding planes, all with the same owner's mark, J.F. One of these is a rare cabinetmaker's drawer edge plane. Sadly, the wedge finial is sheared off on this plane, but that is easy to fix and this is a rare and very desirable plane. These planes were probably owner made, and are almost certainly Pennsylvania planes. They are from an old Pennsylvania collection and they have the style of early PA planes. The other 4 planes are, a fixed drawer bottom plane, a 1/8" bead, a 1/2" bead. and a halving plane that looks like it was made by modifying a round. I put no value on the 5th plane. The drawer edge plane alone is worth the lot price. G+ $199

Antique Molding Plane

MP11017 M. Copeland, Warranted An as found 1" bolection plane. The depth stop has been reduced a bit, so that it will cut deeper than intended, unless you build it back up. There is a hang hole in the rear, and a chip in the boxing at the rear. A nice quality user plane, and very cheap for this profile. Good $89

Antique Molding Plane

MP10126 J. M. Taber, New Bedford A 1 5/8" bead with quirked ogee. This plane was found years ago, in a box of planes, at the dump on Cape Cod. I bought it from Dale Lumsden, a man who then operated an antiques shop on Cape Cod. The plane is really crisp and looks about unused. There is a small sliver of wood missing from the lower right corner. Uncleaned and about as nice as they come. There was a set of 24 hollows and rounds with it at the time it was found at the dump. This plane has been in my collection for a long time. Its a good one. G++ $99

Antique Molding Plane

MP101157 S. C. Dunham, T.J. M'Master, Auburn A delicate little astragal with Grecian, made between 1821 and 1825 in the NY state prison at Auburn. A rare maker, a scarce profile, and a nice plane. Lightly cleaned by a previous collector. G++ $99

Antique Molding Plane

MP101056 Hills & Winship, Springfield, MS A 2 1/2" wide Grecian ogee with bevel and bevel. I don't recall seeing this profile before, two symmetric bevels in a row. It would take a strong person to push this. The wedge has the typcial lengthwise split. Some checking in the body. As found. Good $109

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP10081 A. B. Seidenstricker & co, 90 W. Balto. St. Balto. This is a rare (unique in my experience), compassed American stick and rebate sash plane. It has an adjustable nose as on a British style compass plane. Baltimore makers aslo made British style compass planes, but I have never seen a compassed sash plane before, adjustable or otherwise. This plane is in very clean original, as found, condition. Both blades are wrong. They fit the slots but need to be ground to fit this plane. With a plane this rare, this doesn't bother me too much. Living near Baltimore, and knowing Baltimore collectors, I have seen a lot of Baltimore planes, but I have never seen another of these. Quite a find. G++ $1895

Antique Molding Plane

MP10073 Greenfield Tool Co. A scarce reverse ogee without a fillet, i.e. the type that fences on the side of the profile. These are much tricker to use, hence why they are scarce. Marked No. 462, and 5/8, which it is. Nice as found condition. G+ $65

Antique Molding Plane

MP100427 E. Smith, Warranted A tiny 1/2" astragal with Grecian. Profiles this complex and so narrow as really hard to come by. This plane is as found, and needs some cleaning with wax, but it is straight and will make a good user. Some of the boxing is loose now. The left rear edge is a bit rough, but otherwise this plane is pretty crisp, just dirty. It should clean to G+ $65

Antique Molding Plane

MP10043 M. Crannel This is a form of a door molding plane that was only offered by the Albany makers. It is marked 7/8" although the actual cutting width is just under 3/4". This is plane is in very crisp condition, but it has an old coat of light varnish on it. It looks OK as it is, but if you remove the varnish I would rate it Fine- $89

Antique Molding Plane

MP100269 F. Dallicker An unsual 7/8" cove with fillet by a scarce Pennsylvania provincial maker. This plane is from an important PA plane collection. Dallicker planes are usually all beat up, so this one, with a great profile and in great condition, is a find. G++ $165

Antique Molding Plane

MP100270 Bensen & Crannell, Albany A stick and rabbet style sash plane that cuts an ogee for the molding. I have never seen this profile on an American stick and rabbet sash plane before. Most of them are ovolos, many others are rustic or lamb's tongues, and a few are cove with ovolo, but yet this seemingly simple profile does not show up. The plane is in crisp as found condtion. A rare find. G++ $145

Antique Molding Plane

MP100143 J. R. Gale This plane cuts a 1 7/8" profile that is quite rare. A fillet, a cove, and then a deep ogee. The boxing is keyed so that it can't warp. Gale was a Providence Rhode Island maker who only worked for a short time, and in my experience his planes are quite scarce. I can see why since doing the boxing this way would have been much more time consuming than the usual way of doing it. There are three lines carved into one side, probably as some means of identifying the plane. The wedge is a properly made replacement that most people would not notice is replaced. It may be a Bob Baker job but I am not sure. There is a tiny chip on the edge of the iron where it seems to have recently been dropped out of the plane. This can be easily removed with a Dremel tool. G+ $329

Antique Molding Plane

MP90326 C. Harwood This is a super clean and crisp 7/8" quirked ogee. I don't see many 18th Century American molding planes in this wonderful untouched condition. This plane has one very minor defect. A small piece of boxing is missing just forward of the iron. I would not pay any attention to that. I highly recommend this one to the true connoisseur. G++ $265

Antique Molding Plane

MP90260 Unmarked This is an early applewood complex molder that cuts a wonderful 3/4" square ovolo with cove. I found this plane years ago in the Shenandoa Valley, and I would guess that it was craftsman made in that area. It has wide flat chamfers. The wedge finial was sheared off and I replaced it with a guess as to what it would have looked like. From my collection. Good $145

Antique Molding Plane

MP90124 S&H. Hills, Amhert, Mass This is a really nice as found steep Grecian that is 1" wide and about 3/4" high, which is quite steep. Wonderful patina. There is one old chip in the front of the sole where the plane must have struck a bench dog. This is an especially nice plane from an especially good collection. G+ $119

Antique Molding Plane

MP81241 R&L Carter This is a very clean complex molder that cuts a 1 inch Grecian ovolo with bevel. This plane has been properly waxed. It has been in an important collection and is in superb original condition. A collector's dream condition. G++ $75

Antique Molding Plane

MP81213 J. Searing This is a super complex astragal with cove and grecian. The cut is about 1" wide. There is a 2" piece of boxing in the rear that has been properly replaced with the grain running the right way and all that, but no effort was made to color it. This is a to die for profile and the rest of the plane is in nice as found condition. G+ $295

Antique Molding Plane

MP81146 Jno. M. Barkley This is a very rare American sash plane made to cut the sash from the top like the early English models, rather than from the side like the typical 19th Century British style. This plane cuts a 1/2" sash ovolo and has the nice deep fence typical of most British sash planes. Stick and Rabbet Baltimore sash planes were common, but I don't recall seeing another English style sash. It is in nice as found condition. I rated it low because it has some shrinkage checks on the toe and their is one spot of old rat chew on the lower edge of the fence. This plane will look very good with a gentlry applied coat of wax and would also make a good user. Good $85

Antique Molding Plane

MP81111 Z. J. McMaster & Co. Auburn, NY This is a nice crisp molder that cuts a 1 1/8" wide Grecian without a fillet. This is a scarce profile. The plane has been nicely waxed and is in well cared for condition. There is some rat chew on the wedge and the rear of the plane on the upper right hand edge. Heavy, dense, old growth beech with wonderul color. G+ $65

Antique Molding Plane

MP80616 A. Smith, Rehoboth This is a classic New England crown molder cutting the ever popular ogee with fillet and reverse ogee. It is birch with a fantastic look. It is uncleaned with very nice surface. There are two bits of bad news. The tote is a proper replacement that is very well done. Not Bob Baker quality, but a really good second place. The other issue is that some utter nincompoop has used the front of the plane to set a saw. What were they thinking? Still, this is great 18th Century New England crown molder at a fraction of the price of what it would be without any complaints. G+ $1999

Antique Molding Plane

MP80553 E. Moses, Hartford This is an as found 3/4" center bead. There is a chip to the end of one piece of boxing and two old screw holes in the sole where a strip would have been attached to reduce the depth of cut. This mark is very scarce and I have not seen it before. It rates 3 stars in Tom Elliot's book. G+ $69

Antique Molding Plane

MP80252 Unmarked This superb plane cuts a 7/8" wide astragal with bolection. It is a shallower version of this very complex profile than one normally sees. The plane is as found and is crisp and wonderful. I have had this plane in my personal collection for nearly 20 years and I just think it is a great piece. G++ $229

Antique Molding Plane

MP80116 John Bell, Phila. This is a 1 1/2" wide handled ogee with bead. Nice untouched original condition. Branded three times by the owner in the Philadelphia style, "L. Sperry". A nice plane with no problems. G+ $195

Antique Molding Plane

MP70625 I. Martin This is a scarce 2 7/8" wide cabinetmaker's cornice plane. The mark is very faint but I am pretty sure that it is I Martin, an early New England maker of which little seems to be known. This plane looks like it is circa 1800. It is very dry and is one plane where I would approve of applying a coat of linseed oil. There is a check right down the center of the plane, but other than that, I think this plane will look great when it is cleaned up. These small cornice planes that are appropriate for cabinetmaking are really scarce. Good $485

Antique Molding Plane

MP60938 J. T. Jones, Phila This is a matched pair of table planes (rule joint) in 1/2" size. They are quite dark, which is why museums now regret ever using linseed oil. These planes were well oiled and now it is darkening. They are used but not abused and will make great users or with this rare mark, should thrill a collector as well. They have a nice honest look about them. Good $199

Antique Molding Plane

MP60626 D. M. Shepard, Albany This is one of my favorite profiles, an astragal with cove and taurus. The plane is marked 5/8", but uncharacteristically, this is measuring the depth of cut. The width of cut is 7/8". The plane is crisp and as found, except that there is a very small area of water damage on the lower front edge. There is also a little over 3 inches of boxing missing from the rear. Without these two issues, I would rate this a $300 plane, with them I still think that it is a steal. G+ $149

Antique Molding Plane

MP50223 J. Gibson, Albany This is a rare plane that looks like a sash plane but in fact cuts an ogee on each side. Probably used for doors. It is clean and crisp, and never touched. The right blade was missing when we found it and we have put a blade in that fits properly but needs to be ground to shape. We will leave that for the new owner. A very unusual form. G+ $95

Antique Molding Plane

30924 Unmarked This is a most unusual plane. It is definitely professionally made but it is not marked because there is a defect in the wood right where it would have been stamped. It may be Baltimore made as these guys often used stock with defects. This plane was probably originally associated with handrailing but I have never seen this profile before. The profile is 2" wide. The condition is really clean and crisp except for some very minor deformation of the lower edge of the wedge finial on one side only. G+ $119

Antique Molding Plane

20938 W. Raymond This is a nice clean as found 18th Century New England plane. The profile is a very nice bead with Taurus. The cut is about 1 1/16" wide. Lignum boxing. Very pronounced features, a handsome and desireable plane. G+ $159

Antique Molding Plane

1032 T.J.McMaster This is a 1/2" grecian ovolo in figured applewood. A truly stunning looking plane. Very heavy and dense. Marked on the back with a quill pen, grecian ovolo, 1.00. What a deal!!! A rare and desireable collector's piece. G++ $265

Antique Molding Plane

00138 Early Unmarked This 10" long complex molder is a classic Early American molder. Unusual shape to the shoulder. Clean and as found, this is a very impressive plane. Cuts an astragal with Grecian. Could go to work tomorrow, but would be a proud addition to most collections. G++ $135

Antique Molding Plane

981210 W. Raymond This plane cuts a steep 1" astragal with ovolo. Lignum boxes with 2 strips. Super wide flat chamfers. Really has a great early look about it. Raymond served in the Revolutionary war. 9 5/8" long. Uncleaned, as found condition. G+ $295

British Molding Planes

Griffiths, Norwich

MP120169 Griffiths, Norwich A matched set of 6 beads, all marked with the same owner's mark, but only 3 of the 6 have the maker's mark stampled on them. The sizes are: 1/8, 3/16(the boxing is chipped in the rear, not an issue for use), 1/4, 3/8, 1/2,& 3/4. That is less than 30 dollars each for a matched set. (translation: cheap). They are as found and need only to be waxed. G+ $179

Bailey, Sunderland

MP120173 Bailey, Sunderland A 1 5/8" astragal with reverse ogee, a classic profile The plane has two old screw holes in the fence where an extension was once attached, and two more in the side, the possible reason for which eludes me. Superb original condition. Provenance: With the Mechanick's Workbench, then the Prucha collection. Afterward in my own collection for the last 16 years. G++ $149

James Panton, Aberdeen

MP120128 James Panton, Aberdeen A run-of-the-mill 5/16" bead. Not really The Best Things quality, but it is a good first bead for a user on a budget. Good $20

I. Kendall

MP120136 I. Kendall A matched pair of snipe bill planes from a scarce early 19th Century Bristol maker. The boxing on these planes is loose and distressed condition. If it was all glued back in securely, the planes should work fine. Some boxing is missing but I don't really think that this will matter. The blades have been carelessly cleaned but some they will sharpen fine. This is a pretty shabby pair of snipe bills, but with all the demand for these lately I figured that I had better buy them anyway. They will make good users until you can find a more pristine pair. G- Sold

Moodey

MP120137 Moodey A #4 hollow. Waxed by a collector. This is an 18th Century plane. G+ $29

Hields, Nottingham

MP120143 Hields, Nottingham A 2" wide bead, bolection, and bevel. This profile is unique in my experience. The plane is in great as found condition, but sadly, a notorious American collector, stamped his name and inventory number on the back. Other than that, the plane is connoisseur quality. G+ $159

A Mathieson & Son

MP120149 A Mathieson & Son A fully boxed 3/16" bead with an original polished finish. The boxing was not properly seated in the rear and I pried it up to make sure that it would come out OK. You need to pull it out, clean out the slot, and glue it back in. The plane will make a great user. It is in nice clean condition. It is marked 1/8", but that is wrong, it measures 3/16". G+ $36

Griffiths, Norwich

12011 Griffiths, Norwich A 5/16" side bead in moderately used condition. Untouched, but needing nothing more than to be waxed. It is slip sided, meaning the depth stop was intended to be removable, but I would not recommend taking it off. It is too easy to break off the screws doing this. Unless the screws are bright like new, I don't recommend trying to remove them. A good user in a desirable size. G+ $36

King & Compy King & Compy King & Compy

12019 King & Compy A rare and superb large handled, dual-iron, complex molding plane, cutting a 1 7/8" bolection with cove. The plane is 13 inches long. British molding planes in this form are really hard to come by. Now for the bad news. When I got it, which was about 20 years ago, both blades were missing. I have put to irons in that fit properly, but they have not been ground to the profile. That is for you to have fun with, since clearly I never go to it and my list is not getting shorter. This would be a $600 plane if it was all correct, or if an unscrupulous dealer had it and said it was all correct. G++ $299

B. Bown

12015 B. Bown A matched group of 5 18th Century hollows and rounds from what was once probabl a full set of 36. Represented are 2 hollow, 3 round, 4 hollow, 8 hollow, & 11 round. All are in superb as found condition. That is less than $30 each for signed 18th Century planes. Fine- $145

Antique Molding Plane

MP1112241 Unmarked An ordinary 3/16" side bead, of course 3/16 is not the easiest size to find but it is one of the most useful. The plane was probably cleaned by a collector at some point in time. A good user. G+ Sold

Antique Molding Plane

MP1112255 Arthington, Manchester A nice as found 3/4" astragal with Grecian. G_ Sold

Antique Molding Plane

MP1112256 J. Buck, Holborn Viaduct, London A reeding plane which simultaneously cuts 3 3/16" beads. Fully boxed and straight. Most of these planes are warped and unusable, but this one is fine. There are a few holes in each side from old applied fences. Nicely waxed by a collector. Quite a nice and scarce plane. G+ $65

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP111232 C. Nurse & Co, 182 & 184 Walworth Road, London S.E. A group of 5 molding planes, and 4 sash templates, all owned by one W. Saunders. There are two pairs of sash ovolos. I don't quite understand the markings on them. One pair is marked 5/8" and 1 1/2", and the other pair is marked 5/8" and 1 3/4". There is also a huge, crisp and fine 1 1/2" ovolo in just superb condition. What most would call mint. It has a Marples marked iron, which is unusual on a molding plane. The sash templates are the proper original ones for the pairs, 2 each, and are marked by Nurse, and have the size markings as well. Also marked by the owner. I have never had such a complete grouping, two pairs of planes both with the proper templates, and with 5th plane which is fantastic on its own. You just don't find sets like this. One pair rates about G+, the other pair G++, and the large plane is in a class of its own. G+ - Fine $349

Antique Molding Plane

MP111245 E. Preston, 77 Litchfield St. Birm A very unusual profile a bead with a bevel. The side has been reduced and the plane has no depth stop. It may have had one originally, and one could easily be put back on. Lightly cleaned by a collector. The profile is 1 5/16" wide. An interesting plane that I would ask 95 for it there was no evidence of modification to the shoulder side. Good $49

Antique Molding Plane

MP111251 Jennion A rare thumbnail profile, suitable for a drawer edge. This one is just over 1/4", but still well under 5/16". The plane is 10 inches long, and of course is by one of the Wooding apprentices. It has been cleaned by a collector. An important maker and an important profile. This plane is over 250 years old. G+ $245

Antique Molding Plane

MP11124 John Rodgers A bold and impressive 1 1/4" ogee by an early London maker. There are no owner's marks on this plane and the maker's mark is perfect. The plane is 9 3/4" long. It is probably the nicest plane by this maker that I have seen. Really superb. G++ $195

Antique Molding Plane

MP111130 W. Squire Squire is listed as working in London around 1760 and the plane has great early features. The surface is wonderful. If I am interpreting it right, it cuts a quarter round with fillet, but it does not have an integral depth stop. I particularly like this one. Fine- $95

Antique Molding Plane

MP111114 I. Cogdell A 10" long complex molder that cuts a rare fillet, reverse ogee, and fillet 7/8" wide. If this plane were untouched I would have rated it even higher. Some fool has cleaned the blacksmith's scale off of the blade so that the entire blade is bright, including the iron tang. The plane seems to have been coated with a very light coat of oil, but that is really OK and might even be period. I can't fathom what motivated someone to clean the blade the way that they did. I would try to darken it a bit. A rare early plane, with a great profile, from the infancy of commercial planemaking in Britain. G++ $265

Antique Molding Plane

MP111099 Varvill & Son, York A one inch bead with Grecian. A tricky profile to use because the only fence is the side of the bead. Thus, the astragal with Grecian is a much more common profile to find. Lovely as found condition. G++ $59

Antique Molding Plane

MP111079 Gleave, Manchester A 1 1/4" ogee in nice as found condition. Particularly nice color, The only minor complaint is one old scratch in the sole that won't impact anything. A nice plane. This one never had the removable fillet that many of these wider ogees had. G++ $65

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP111053 Thomas Okines A very crisp as found astragal. This plane had a removable fillet, that is now gone. It would be a 1/2" astragal with the fillet, and 5/8" without it. There are 2 small worm holes in the plane, and more worm holes in the very base of the wedgie. Old and dead. This plane pre-dates our country and is in nice untouched condition. The mark is the one with the crown on top, but the mark was struck in such a way that the crown went off the edge of the plane. From my personal collection. G++ $145

Antique Molding Plane

MP111054 Deeley A super complex 1 1/2" wide custom profile molding, that I will not attept to describe. The plane looks much earlier than the dates in Goodman's book for Deeley, with broad flat chamfers more indicative of late 18th Century than the 1826 starting date listed. The plane appears to have been wiped down with linseed oil but is otherwise untouched. Profiles like this are truly rare, and I rarely use that word. G+ $245

Antique Molding Plane

MP111047 Mismatched A mismatched pair of table planes. The profiles are not a perfect match, but certainly close enough to be used together. For the period woodworker on a budget. Priced to get rid of them. G+ Sold

Antique Molding Plane Antique Molding Plane

MP111020 A Mathieson, Glasgow A twin-ironed 5/8" wide cove with ovolo sash plane. Not marked with a number, so it was probably not originally sold as a pair as so many were. There has been an extended fence removed that was added by an owner. This left some tack holes and staining on the bottom of the fence. A really great profile in nice untouched condition. G+ $69

Antique Molding Plane

MP11092 Phillipson A 10" long 1/2" square ovolo molding plane in dirty as found condition. There has been some glue, I think that it is hide glue, spilled on this plane. This needs to be carefully chipped off. It is otherwise a really nice example. Once its cleaned, it should rate at least G+ $145

Antique Molding Plane

MP110853 John Elsworth, Glasgow A fully boxed 3/16" cock bead plane, 7 1/2" long. This plane is quite dirty and untouched. The blade is rusty and the boxing is not fully seated. However, I think that will minor effort you can make it into a great user for short money. I found three small insect holes in it that looked relatively recent to me. I put the plane in the freezer for a few months and I microwaved it. If they survived that I would be very surprised, but I tell you so that you will know to keep an eye on it. I am keeping it in a ziplock bag. Good $49

Antique Molding Plane

MP110821 Varvill & Son, York This huge molder cuts a Grecian ogee with bevel just over 2 inches wide. It has a nice dark patina and is from a good collection. If you wish to use it, the iron has one small rust spot, just at the outside curve of the ogee, which will need to be ground out. Not a big deal. The harder thing would be getting the strength to push this plane. I couldn't. G++ $75

Antique Molding Plane

MP110748 Nelson, 122 Edgeware Rd A rare custom complex profile molder with a York pitch iron. This highly complex, 1 1/2" wide profile is unique in my experience. The plane is in very clean as found condition. Highly recommended. G++ $229

Antique Molding Plane

MP110718 Wm Moss An as found 3/16" bead. Some old worming but nothing serious. This will make a good user in a desirable size. Good $35

Antique Molding Plane

MP110647 B. Frogatt A 7/8" square ovolo. Somebody has varnished and polished this plane. It actually looks quite good, despite my abhorrence at this kind of conduct. A nice 18th Century plane. G+ $59

Antique Molding Plane

MP110648 T. Watson A pair of 3/8" rule joint (table) planes. I have seen T. Watson before, but this maker is not recorded. The planes appear to be 18th Century. The wood is some kind of fruitwood, which has a lovely color. They are about 9 7/8" long. They have been waxed and polished, perhaps with 4 0 steel wool. They feel very smooth, but then this wood would normally be smoother than beech. A nice pair of cabinetmaker's planes. G++ $175

Antique Molding Plane

MP110623 Jennion A 10" long 5/16" square ovolo by one of Robert Wooding's apprentices. In my experience, Jennion planes are by far the most scarce of the Wooding apprentices. Wooding planes themselves are also much more scarce than people realize, because so many of the fakes have come to be acceptned as right. The wedge on this plane has great form. The mark is not deeply struck, which is nearly alwasy the case with Jennion, but it is clearly legible. There is a sliver, running 1 1/8" long, missing from the rear of the depth stop. There is also a chip from the rear left side where the plane was struck to set it and a piece chipped off. This is an excellent example of this important maker's work. Provenance: From my personal collection and before that with the collection of Jim Wareham. G+ $165

Antique Molding Plane

MP110319 Robert Wooding A huge hollow measuring 1 3/4" wide and 10 1/4" long. The radius is tighter than a typical hollow and this plane may have had a special purpose. The mark is not super clear, but it can be read. I can guarantee that it is right, and now one of the myriad "Woodings" now floating around with a fake Wooding mark. The wedge looks original but I think that the finial has been somewhat reduced in size. This plane is nearly 300 years old. An honest example that while not perfect, is better than many that I see. Good $175

Antique Molding Plane

MP110293 A Mathieson & Son I don't fully understand this plane. It is 7 1/8" long and is fully boxed. The profile is like a side bead, except more more shallow with a very blunt quirk. It is marked 5/16 and that is the width of the cut. It is in as found condition with tool box rash and the common lengthwise crack in the wedge. I think that it might have been for putting a shallow bead on the edge of tongue and groove joints for panelled backs. A most intersting tool. Good $55

Antique Molding Plane

MP110140 Gabriel A rare fully-boxed triple bead cluster, cutting a 5/8" wide profile that cuts 3 symmetric beads at a 45 degree angle to the edge of the workpiece. This is an elegant and very hard to find profile, but the maker of the Seaton chest tools. G+ $169

Antique Molding Plane

MP101179 Loveage A nice, untouched, 10 3/8" long square ovolo molding plane. Great patina and great lines. The profile is 7/8" wide. The iron is marked Hildik with a very early mark that do no recall seeing before. The only flaw bears mentioning is that the mark is partially overstruck, but still clearly legible. G+ $245

Antique Molding Plane

MP101146 Mutter*, Moseley A 15/16" wide quirked ogee. Nice as found condition. The mark is partially overstamped by an owner. G+ $65

Antique Molding Plane

MP101035 B. Bown A right hand side snipe. This plane is very unusual looking because the blade is much further forward than usual. Great color and great early features. G+ $65

Antique Molding Plane

MP10108 I. Lund, London A quirked ogee, with a removable fillet, which is gone. It is 3/4" without the fillet, and would be 5/8" with it. Nicely waxed with nice original color. A nice London made plane G+ $55

Antique Molding Plane

MP100566 SL Lunt, Liverpool A superb matched pair of left and right handed hand rail shaves. Scrolled wedges with nice original irons. Brass fences with a nice mellow patina. These are truly superb. G++ $595

Antique Molding Plane

MP100569 Moseley, 16 New St A fenced triple reed with very steep pitch to the iron. The cut width is just under 1 inch. Great heavy boxing. Nice uncleaned condition. G+ $98

Antique Molding Plane

MP100553 Higgs An exceptionally clean as found stair rail plane with a great round top iron by Pearson. From a good London collection. Fine- $119

Antique Molding Plane

MP100253 Nelson, York An unsprung 1 3/8" astragal with ogee. This is an 18th Century plane but I am still surprised that it is unsprung, as that is usually a feature of planes even older than this one. It has great old patina and is in very likable condition. The one flaw is that the mark is very faintly struck. G+ $125

Antique Molding Plane

MP100217 King & Peach, Hull An unusually shallow 7/8" Grecian ogee with bevel. Will clean to G+ $59

Antique Molding Plane

MP100145 Wm. Moss Cuts a triple reed molding, each bead being 3/8". This profile is scarce, and when you do find it, it is often not straight, but this one is nice and straight. Dirty and as found, but quite good under the dirt and should clean up to G++ $119

Antique Molding Plane

MP100146 Wm. Moss Cuts a 1/2" center bead with a following bead (the following bead is a bead that doesn't cut, and just acts as a guide so that you can work across a board cutting beads. There are 3 holes in the bottom where a fence had been attached. There is also a chip in one piece of boxing at the rear. It is dirty but will clean up nicely and is really a nice plane and a pretty scarce type as well. G+ $99

Antique Tool

MP100146 Wm. Moss Cuts a 1/2" center bead with a following bead (the following bead is a bead that doesn't cut, and just acts as a guide so that you can work across a board cutting beads. There are 3 holes in the bottom where a fence had been attached. There is also a chip in one piece of boxing at the rear. It is dirty but will clean up nicely and is really a nice plane and a pretty scarce type as well. G+ $99

Antique Tool

MP100125 Unmarked An as found super complex molder from that workshop clearance group. All of those planes needed some cleaning, as does this one. It cuts a 3/4" ogee, beed, Grecian. It looks like it was probably modified from another profile, based on the boxing, but it is still a nice tight mouth. This is a very attractive profile and it should make a good user. There is some old worm on the left side, but nothing serious. G+ $75

Antique Tool

MP91235 Wm Mofs A 1" wide taurus bead by Moss with the early Moss stamp (Mofs). Honest as found condition. Good $29

Antique Tool

MP91221 Higgs A fenced triple reed cutting 3 similar 1/4" side beads for a total width of 3/4". This type of plane is very prone to warping and I often see them that are not usable. This one is straight and nice. The wedge finial is a bit worn or it would have rated an extra plus. From the 1960s workshop clearance that we recently bought. G+ $95

Antique Tool

MP91222 Gardnar A crisp as found 1 1/8" astragal. This front of this plane has the original layout lines from manufacture. This tells us that it was not made using a mother plane, but was probably a customer order in this size. The wedge on this plane is not a perfect fit, so I am not sure if it is orignal. It looks right, and the patina lines tell me that it has been with the plane a long time, but the fit is more like the new molding planes sold today than an original English period molding plane. Great early features and a great plane. G++ $75

Antique Tool

MP91145 Wm. Mofs A 3/4" Taurus bead with the early Moss mark where the double s is replaced with an f. As found and for its age pretty nice. It has seen some use but no abuse. The blade is clearly marked Hildick. Another plane from that workshop clearance. Good $59

Antique Tool

MP9062 Moseley and Hawksworth This is a 5/8" quirked ogee in decent as found condition. It needs a light cleaning. There is a piece of veneer chipping off of the fence, which was glued on to slighty reduce the profle width. I would carefully remove it. A good user. Good $55

Antique Tool

MP9063 D. Lovett I bought this plane in England but I must say that the wedge looks more American, and the profile is certainly one that I normally see on American planes. It is one of my favorite profiles, the astragal with cove and astragal. This one cuts a 1" wide profile. Super complex planes like this are becoming nearly extinct. This one is in wonderful as found condition. The mark is neatly marked like a maker's mark, and there is another owner's mark on the plane, but I can't say for sure that this is an owner's mark, as I can't find any reference to this maker. This is a superb complex molder. $249

Antique Tool

MP90344 Jno. Cockbain, Carlisle This is a twin-ironed complex molder that cuts a 1 1/4" wide cove with ogee. The cove blade does not come up about the back of the wedge but it seems to be the original blade. The plane is as found with a nice crisp surface. There are too old holes in the bottom of the fence where an extension would have been screwed on. This is a great plane with a great and rare profile. G+ $165

Antique Tool

MP90277 Arthington, Manchester This plane cuts a 1 1/2" wide bead with quirked ogee. It is in dark as found condtion. Still razor sharp after all these years. G+ $98

Antique Tool Antique Tool

MP90244 D. Malloch, Perth This is a twin-ironed complex molder that cuts a 3/4" wide astragal with ovolo, a very unusal profile in a very desirable small size. I love this profile. The front edge fo the profile has some wear, not from use but some kind of neglect, that is why the rating is low. Good $159

Antique Tool Antique Tool

MP90253 Craftsman Made This is a tiny compassed rebate plane, measuring only 2 inches long and 5/8" wide. It is as found and was clearly for final delicate fitting work. Most of the very small planes like this that I see are either clearly fakes, or so overcleaned that I can't tell for sure if they are fakes or not. This one is absolutely guaranteed to be genuine. G+ $89

Antique Tool

MP90214 Thomas Turner This is an exceptionally clean and nice wide complex molder. It cuts a 1 5/8" bead with cove. The plane has nice light patina and is as found. This is the condition that really excited me. A superb plane. G++ $145

Antique Tool

MP90149 J. Miller, 37 Clayton St. This is a massive twin-ironed complex molder that cuts a 2 inch wide cove with bead and ovolo. Wonderful original color. This plane came from an important collection and has been carefully waxed. A superb plane. G+ $185

Antique Tool

MP81237 T. Turner, Queen St. Sheffield This is a twin-ironed complex molder that cuts a one inch Grecian ogee with bevel. This plane was rubbed down with steel wool so now it is unnaturally smooth, but is otherwise a nice plane and will make a great user or collector's piece. G+ $95

Antique Tool

MP81113 I. Teal This is an early molder that cuts a side bead with reverse ogee, a very elegant 18th Century profile. The profile is 7/8" wide. The plane has a nice dark patina. The bad news is that when I got it there was no blade and I put in a blade that fits but needs to be ground to the profile. The mark is believed to be from Leeds, based on some examples also bearing a Leeds mark, but the maker has not been identified. It is a rare 18th Century plane well that belongs in a good collection. G+ Sold

Antique Tool

MP81011 Moir & Co, 117 Trongate, Glasgow This is a twin-ironed complex molder that cuts a 5/8" wide thumbnail with ogee, a classic Scottish molding for surrounding raised panels. The plane is in lovely as found condition. Moir is a common maker but I have never seen this mark before and it must be pretty scarce. A nice plane G++ $145

Antique Tool

MP80840 Buck, 145 Tottenham Ct Rd This plane cuts a very scarce profile, a 1 1/2" wide bead with cove. It is unsprung. Except for slight evidence of the wedge been knocked out, the plane is flawless and would have been rated Fine. This plane was in my collection for years and is in the condtion that I dream about. G++ $119

Antique Tool

MP80825 McPherson This is a twin-ironed complex molder that cuts a 1 3/8" wide side bead with ogee. Nice patina. Twin-ironed planes that have both original blades and both original irons have, for some reason, gotten quite scarce. This plane has no apologies and it is by a scarce mid-19th Century maker. G+ $169

Antique Tool

MP80826 W. Preston, Pentonville, London, Maker This is a very complex molding plane that cuts a 1 1/2" wide bolection with cove. Truly a special profile. The bad news is that the blade has a chip in it, so to use the plane it would need to have this chip ground out with great care. This is not a problem to do but is time consuming and tedious. A great plane that is worth the trouble. G+ $139

Antique Tool

MP80723 Fairclough, Liverpool This is a twin-ironed plane that cuts a very complex, but not too wide, profile. I love these narrow profiles that are all twists and turns. This profile is 1" wide and has a bead, followed by a Grecian ogee with bevel. The only complaint that I have is that both wedges have been damaged on the lower corner of the finial from a user who banged them out carelessly. Nicely waxed and ready for a collector or connoisseur user. G+ $165

Antique Tool Antique Tool Antique Tool

MP80540 I.Cox This is a rare handled English complex molding plane. It was apparently made for the American market, which makes sense for this style of plane. I make that prempton because it bears two different American style owner's brands. It looks very much like a Napier plane of the same period. The mark is the early Cox mark, which is a big rectangular mark. The profile is the really great news here. It is a very unusual and appealing profile. The profile is 1 1/2" wide and would fit in well as main part of a cornice mold on a piece of furniture. The iron is a round topped Hildick. The bad news is that the tote is a later replacement, more in the 19th Century style. Also, the rear of the plane is marked with an American collector's mark and inventory number. I can overlook the tote and the desecration because the rest of the plane is so good. It is just a great profile that I won't even begin to try and describe. G+ $265

Antique Tool

MP80341 W. Greenslade, Bristol This plane cuts a V groove, but it may be that it is a rebate plane that was modified for this purpose. Either way, it is a good useful plane. G+ $38

Antique Tool

MP80313 A. Mathieson & Son, Glasgow & Edinburgh This is a crisp as found twin iron molding plane of a type that I have never seen before. It cuts a 15/16" astragal, but has a second blade that looks to have been a nicker, behind the cutter. I don't understand the point of a nicker behind the cutter, and that might explain why it is missing. The rear wedge and blade are gone. It is useable as it is. It is uncleaned but very crisp. The front cutter is very near the front of the plane. This is a very unusual plane by any measure and could easily be restored or used as is. G++ $99

Antique Tool

MP80253 Unmarked This plane cuts a really monumental 2" wide bead with quirked ogee. It is a twin-iron plane. As found and needs nothing. After over a Century of waiting, the irons are still sharp enough to use! All that this plane lacks is a maker's mark. G+ $169

Antique Tool

MP80229 W. Greenslade, Bristol This is a 5/8" wide astragal with Grecian. From a collection and properly waxed. G+ $59

Antique Tool

MP80235 Moseley, Goswell St This plane is by James Moseley, of whom little is said in Goodman's book other than that they are uncommon. I have never had one before. This plane is as found, and very crisp. It needs only a light cleaning with wax. It is also a very complex and wide molder, cutting a 1 7/8" wide astragal with Grecian ogee with bevel. A very nice plane that I highly recommend. G+ $149

Antique Tool

MP70819 Mutter, Moseley This quirked ogee plane cuts a 1 1/4' ogee without the removable fillet, or with the fillet 1 inch. The fillet is missing, but that is an easy thing to replace. The plane has not been cleaned and has a nice light patina. There are 4 old applied fence holes in the side. A nicer early molder. Good $65

Antique Tool

MP7089 Wilcox, Manchester This massive molding plane cuts a 1 3/4" wide bead with quirked ogee. A very elegant architectural molding that would take a strong user to push. G+ $95

Antique Tool

MP70424 Arthington, Manchester This plane cuts a 1 3/8" bead with Grecian. It is as found and needs a light cleaning but it should make a nice user. Good $59

Antique Tool

MP70244 Buck, 247 Tottenham Ct Rd This is a 7/8" Grecian Ogee with bevel. It is unusual in that it has very little spring. Nice as found condition. G+ $55

MP61175 Unmarked This is a rare super complex custom profile molder. It is maker made but not signed. The owner's name is a bit memorable, W. Sheepshanks. I recall that name from a Thomas Hardy novel, I think The Mayor of Casterbridge. I won't even attempt to describe the profile, except to say that it is 1" wide. The plane has an old oiled finish and is quite crisp. It really has too much dried linseed oil on the surface and I would clean it off. You won't see this profile again. G+ $189

MP61176 Hathersich This is a scarce English handled stick are rebate sash plane. It cuts a lambs tongue sash and the rebate, quite strangely, is on a slope. The profile is just over 2" wide. Clearly for some type of grand architectural sash. Wonderful untouched patina. The irons have very light pitting but would be fine to use if you so desired. The tote is quite upright and a bit unusual. G+ $169

Antique Tool

MP61141 Wm. Marples & Sons This plane cuts a very unusual canted astragal with ogee. An unusual and very complex profile. The lower edge of the wedge finial is a bit battered but otherwise no problems. Very few profiles this unusual and complex show up. G+ $145

Antique Tool

MP60729 Varvill, York This plane cuts a 1 1/4" wide astragal with Grecian. The shape of the Grecian is more rounded than most of the planes, which make sit a bit different, and to my eye more attractive. It is from a good collection and has been properly cleaned with wax. G+ $75

Antique Tool

50712 Hathersich This is a Grecian ogee with bevel that is 1 1/8" wide but quite shallow. The plane has a dark even patina and is very heavy, the result of being soaked in linseed oil when it was new. Good $59

Antique Tool

MP60515 W. Deeley This plane cuts a 1 inch wide astragal with Grecian. The plane is crisp and clean and would rate higher but for some very minor marks on the wedge from begin tapped out. The stock has some nice grain on one side where it was near a branch. That is unusual on English planes. G+ $69

Antique Tool

MP6032 Wm. Moss This is a wide molder, cutting a 1 3/4" wide Grecian with astragal. The condition is properly cleaned. Great original patina. G+ $75

Antique Tool

MP51230 Willmore This is a scarce curved sash plane that cuts a complex cove & ovolo sash in 3/4" size. The plane is as found with wonderful original surface. Willmore is a very scarce maker who worked in Birmingham from 1818 to 1828. York pitch. The only possible complaint is that the bottom of the fence in the front and rear has been chiseled down a bit to better match the curvature of the sole. This plane is from my collection and that never bothered me as it was done a long time ago and the patina matches. G++ $195

Antique Tool

MP51032 Rd. Melhuish, Tool Manufacturers, Fetter Lane E.C. This plane cuts a rare profile, a sort of elongated astragal with bolection. The width of the cut is 1" but the depth is quite shallow. It is marked on the rear with the Melhuish mark. The Melhuish mark is interesting because it implies they made this plane. They almost certainly did not. Formerly in the Richmond collection. G+ $75

Antique Tool

40623 J.A. Clarke, Liverpool This is a big, beautiful, twin-ironed joiner's complex molding plane. Cuts a 1 3/4" bead with Grecian. Nice color and form, this is a plane that a collector would covet and a user would cherish. G+ $119

Antique Tool

4015 John Moseley & Son This plane cuts a 1 3/8" wide Grecian with astragal. Long ago the fence width was reduced so that the fillet on the inside is much wider than usual. This could be put back but it makes for an interesting profile as is. This is a nice plane as well. Waxed and from a good collection. G+ $79

Antique Tool

3117 Beck & Co. This plane cuts a 1 3/8" Grecian with astragal. A nice bold architectural molding that I have also seen incorporated into the cornice molding of country furniture. In particular I remember a walnut corner cabinet that had this molding capped by a separate square ovolo. G+ $75

Antique Tool

30446 Heathcott, Sheffield This plane cuts a 2 1/8" wide grecian ogee with bevel and chamfer. This is a very wide molding and a profile that I have not seen before. Grecian ogee with bevel is common but the extra chamfer makes it a rare if not unique molding. The last 1 3/4" of boxing is replaced and while it is properly fit, it is not made from the correct wood, the grain direction does not match, the coloring job is poor. Personally I would redo it but it might not bother you. I priced it to reflect this. A great plane. Good $99

3105 Josef Herrmann, Neustift This is a fantastic complex molder by what I think is an Austrian maker. I have seen very few German or Austrian complex molders. This plane is crisp and unused, perhaps because it is missing the blade. Ouch. The profile is square ovolo with a deep ogee and an extra cove. Super complex. The cut is 1 1/8" wide. It is very heavy and appears to be hornbeam. I great plane by any measure. It is slightly dirty but should clean up to better than G++ $99
