Norton Tool Steel Grinding Wheels

Possibly the single most misunderstood aspect of sharpening is the importance of choosing the right Norton grinding wheel. Most people use the wheels that came on the grinder. These wheels are the worst possible choice. They are almost sure to burn the edge of a cutting tool. The wheels that come on a grinder are very hard, designed to be long wearing while removing stock quickly. The opposite style of Norton grinding wheel is needed for hardened tool steel. For this, a soft Norton Grinding wheel, specially formulated to run cool, is needed. We prefer 60 grit for woodworking tools. Without such a Norton wheel, even the most skilled user is likely to burn an edge. With the correct wheel, you still need to be careful and not push too hard, but you will notice a night and day difference. All of the Norton wheels offered here are especially designed for grinding tool steel. They can also be used occasionally for general purpose grinding, but if you need to use your grinder a lot for non-sharpening related work, we recommend using an all purpose wheel for this work. And don't forget to wear safety goggles. Just because they are at the bottom of this page does not mean that we don't rate them first in importance.

Norton "Blue" 3X Tool Steel Grinding Wheel - Made in Mexico
The Norton 3X Blue grinding wheels are Norton's top-of-the-line stock grinding wheels for tool steel. Unlike the custom wheels that Norton used to make for us in Worcester, Mass., these wheels are made in Mexico. Norton has raised the prices so high on the US made wheels that they have become prohibitively expensive. Norton seems to be pushing to move all of their production outside the US. Many hard working Americans that we knew at Norton have been fired. These Mexican wheels are a good value. |
