Williamsburg Strike Knife
Eighteenth Century cabinetmakers, joiners, and even carpenters, relied on a tool called a "strike knife" for layout work. A strike knife is sharpened at both ends, one being either to a point or a very small edge, and the other end being more of a short blade. Our strike knives are made for us by a blacksmith who is employed at Colonial Williamsburg, the word's premier museum for the preservation of early crafts. Like the period originals, these come unsharpened. Every craftsperson had their own ideas of how they wanted them sharpened, so the blacksmiths would only put a rough grind on the blade and leave the rest for the craftsman to finish to their individual preference.
